Saving the Legacy of Texas Heritage Timber

Massive heritage Texas Live Oak tree in San Antonio- Monumental Woodworks Oak Wilt rescue artistry.

We transform ecological loss into timeless community landmarks. Operating across Houston, Austin, and the Texas Hill Country, Monumental Woodworks provides a safe, sustainable, and artistic second life for trees impacted by Oak Wilt.

The Underground Threat & Our Rescue Process

From Houston to the Hill Country, Oak Wilt is destroying some of the oldest heritage trees in Texas. The problem happens completely underground: the roots of these massive trees naturally grow together and interconnect. This allows the disease to travel silently from yard to yard, meaning treating just one tree on your property often isn't enough to stop it.

Following our promise to protect the land, we never carve living or healthy trees. We only step in after a heritage oak has been officially declared dead or has already been cut back by an arborist. To make sure the disease cannot spread, we carve select oak varieties (like Live Oaks and Post Oaks), strip away 100% of the bark, and completely seal the bare timber. This locks the wood down so wood-boring bugs can't move in, safely turning a tragic loss into a permanent, beautiful landmark.

The Red Oak Exception

While we love saving heritage timber, we have a strict, non-negotiable rule: we never carve, transport, or repurpose any species from the Red Oak family. > Red oaks are highly vulnerable to Oak Wilt. When a red oak gets infected, it dies incredibly fast and produces dangerous "fungal mats" right beneath its bark.

These mats attract sap-feeding beetles that carry the deadly disease from tree to tree. If we were to run a chainsaw through infected red oak wood, the flying sawdust and tools could easily spread those live spores straight to your neighbor's healthy trees. To protect the local ecosystem, dead red oaks must be completely disposed of according to state guidelines—never turned into art.

Common Red Oaks in Our Area (Houston, Austin, & The Hill Country):

  • Texas Red Oak (Spanish Oak): The classic, smaller Hill Country oak known for its bright red fall leaves.

  • Shumard Oak: A massive, popular shade tree planted heavily in Austin and Houston neighborhoods.

  • Water Oak: Incredibly common in the humid, wetter soils of Houston and East Texas.

  • Blackjack Oak: A tough, dark-barked tree found scattered across sandy Texas soils.

The Takeaway: If your dead heritage tree is a White Oak variety (like a Live Oak, Post Oak, or Bur Oak), we can safely rescue it and turn it into a landmark.

If it is a Red Oak, If it is a Red Oak, it needs to be safely removed and destroyed by a professional arborist. Make sure to follow all local ordinances regarding wood movement and disposal to keep your property and your community safe
